Participating artists from Shenzhen include Dai Yun, Jiang Zhi, Liu Zhuoquan, Teng Fei, Xiao Quan, Yang Yong, Yao Zhiyan, artists from Guangzhou include Duan Jianyu, Gan Xiao’er, Huang Xaiopeng, Qin Jin, Xu Tan and Zhou Tao, artists from Hong Kong include Pak Sheung-chuen, Luke Ching, Leung Mee-ping, Lam Tung-pang, and Angela Su, and artists from Macao include Frank Lei and Kent Ieong.

The exhibition has been organized jointly by a young team, which includes Wang Jing and Fang Lihua of the OCT Contemporary Art Terminal (OCAT), and Xie Anyu and Wang Dong of the He Xiangning Art Museum.

All born in the 1980s, the four organizers were busy traveling between Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Macao, visiting artists’ workshops and selecting participating artists and works over the past several months.

“This is the first time that OCAT and He Xiangning Art Museum have tried to put together the contemporary art works by artists from Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Macao,” said one organizer Wang Jing.

“Through the works of representative artists from the Pearl River Delta region, we want to show our audience the current conditions of the four cities in the region, which have been developed in a separate but closely related way over the past three decades,” she said.

Shenzhen photographer Xiao Quan’s black and white photographs, “Luohu,” which are continuously shown on a screen through a slide projector, bring audiences back to construction sites and street scenes that could be seen everywhere in Shenzhen throughout the 1990s.

Hong Kong artist Angela Su’s work, “Underground Imagination: Shenzhen and Hong Kong,” is made up of two maps: a map of Shenzhen and a map of Hong Kong. But under close examination, prudent viewers will be able to find the artist has arbitrarily traded the names of streets and landmarks on the two city maps.

Macao artist Kent Ieong’s six-minute video, “Grand Lisboa,” records night scenes of the 44-storey Grand Lisboa, which is located in the heart of downtown Macao’s casino district right next door to the venerable Hotel Lisboa.
