In the 1920s, Gonzalez made a mark on the international art scene with some reliefs that achieved the construction of planes, lines and forms supplementing and intersecting each other, or engaged in mutual rivalry.

The following decades witnessed the birth of his most outstanding works that earned him a place at the forefront of 20th century art and defined his style with the expression “drawing in space.”

His works, covering a large variety of subject matter and techniques, maintained a fragile balance between abstraction and figuration and conveyed the restrained emotional characteristic of human nature in its noblest manifestations.

Born in 1925, Chirino followed a long line of Spanish sculptors stretching back to such important figures as Gonzalez. In his elegant works, Chirino combined a mastery of ironwork and a profound understanding of the international avant-garde movement.

Born in 1929, Alfaro is an important sculptor not only in Spain but also internationally, as demonstrated by so many of his works collected by museums worldwide. Alfaro liked to apply his geometric know-how to create suggestive abstract pieces.

Born in 1945, Navarro began working as an artist in 1964 after training at the School of Fine Arts of San Carlos in Valencia, Spain.

In 1972, Navarro began working with sculpture and used refractory materials and sand which he modeled into the form of chimneys. Navarro’s materials of choice are wood, clay, zinc, lead and, from 1991 onwards, aluminum.

Some of his recurrent subject matters are warriors, totems, moons, buildings, genitals, canalizations, insects and fountains.

Navarro’s works on display have shown the evolution of the artist’s work from 1964 to 2005, with the inclusion of early drawings and paintings, as well as photographs and sculptures in small and large formats.

With the collaboration of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation and Spanish Embassy in China, the exhibition is organized jointly by the IVAM, State Corporation for Spanish Cultural Action Abroad and SFAI. Following Tianjin and Guangzhou, Shenzhen is the third stop for the exhibition.
