HAIR lying on the pillow can be an annoying sight each morning, reminding us that metabolism and aging is a process no one can reverse. Without a second thought, we brush them off and throw them into a garbage can.
More than a century ago, Emperor Guangxu (1871-1908) treated his hair with much more care. All his fallen hair, called “dragon beard,” was collected and kept in a 60-cm-tall gold pagoda. Because the ancient Chinese believed that their skin and hair were bestowed by their parents, these should be treated in accordance with the principles of filial duty.
