"I'm trying to depict in my own language the existence of Christianity in China today," Qiang said.
Born in Taiyuan, Shanxi province in 1966, he graduated from Beijing University of Post and Telecommunications in 1988.
He has been working on his "Holy Icon" series since 2005. Qiang said he had returned to Shanxi every year and stayed with Catholic believers in Liuhe Village for three to four months to take photographs.
"With a population of about 10,000, Liuhe Village is said to be the largest Catholic village in rural China, with more than 95 percent of the villagers Catholic," he said.
Qiang doesn't follow any religion but has shown a keen interest in Christianity. His mother and her grandfather were both Protestant missionaries.
